How to choose the right Social Media channels for your business

Choosing the right social media channels for your business is always a tricky task. Some people choose to have a presence on ALL channels, and while that is admirable, it is not always necessary especially if you have limited resources to work with. At the same time, there are others who prefer to have a limited presence on a few channels in order to ensure consistency. And while that is also commendable, it might lead to your business losing a lot of valuable exposure on channels you might not even be considering.

In today's "How to Tuesday" post we shall be taking a look at all of these questions, and we shall be guiding you towards the best solution for you and your business.

  1. The first question to ask yourself is: "What do I want to achieve out of my presence on this particular channel?" That should be a good indication as to whether you require a presence on a particular channel or now.
  2. The next question should focus on the resources that you have. We all want to produce high quality videos to publish on to our channels ever day. However, do we have the resources to do it? And is it necessary for the videos to be high quality? Or could I perhaps go for something that is more "raw" and realistic?
  3. Look at the content you already have - look at your blogs, student photos, existing videos....etc.
  4. A very important question to answer is related to your target audience. Who is my target audience? And which social media platforms are they present on?
  5. It could also be interesting to take a look at your competitors and see where they have a presence. You probably need to have a presence there too.
  6. Finally, it is important to consider how you will manage these channels and this content. Remember that posting the same thing on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok etc. is definitely not recommended and the reason is simple - you are targetting different audiences on these different platforms, so you need to be speaking to them in a different manner.
